  Men's Health · Bladder & Prostate

The true story of Michael, 62, a former engineer, and his wife Emma, 58 — who agreed to tell us, in two voices, what no man dares say out loud.

"Here are the 3 reasons why urinary leaks ruined our marriage and how we saved it."

Urinary leaks affect a huge number of couples, but not for the reason most people imagine. It's almost never the partner's gaze that breaks things. It's the gaze the man turns on himself.

Many of them shut down. They turn down long drives, concerts, dinners with friends. They cancel the trip they'd been planning for two years. They stop making love. They stop, sometimes, even showing themselves shirtless in their own bedroom. 95% of men who deal with leaks go through this quiet inner collapse, and most of them never tell anyone. Not their doctor. Not their best friend. Not, above all, their partner.

If urinary leaks are getting in the way of you and your husband, read this until the end. Don't stop halfway.

01

He stopped living. And I didn't know why.

At first, it was one Saturday of golf, canceled. Then two. Then the club, completely. He said it was getting boring, that his buddies were trash-talking their wives, that he'd rather stay home. I believed him.

Then he refused to come to our niece's wedding in Georgia. A five-hour drive. He made up some story about his back. Then the trip to Italy we'd been planning for two years, canceled. Then the Springsteen concert I'd already paid the tickets for.

At some point, I told myself: he doesn't love me anymore. It's that simple. He has someone else, or he's bored with me. I came home one night and cried in the bathroom. For six months, I lived with that thought.

02

Intimacy disappeared. And it wasn't desire that was missing.

Here's what nobody talks about: the moment you take your clothes off in front of your wife. You're not wearing boxers anymore. You're wearing an adult diaper from the supermarket. White. Bulky. The kind they sell next to the baby aisle.

I'd worn boxers my whole life. Black, well-cut. The kind your wife sees, after thirty years of marriage, and still smiles at. That was who I was getting undressed in front of her. Not this.

She knew, of course. She'd known for a long time. That wasn't the issue. The issue was me. I'd spent thirty-two years wanting to look like a man in front of her, and now I was standing there in something I wouldn't even put on a child.

So I came up with excuses. Tiredness. Work, except I was retired. Stress, except I had nothing stressful left. For two years, we barely made love. And the truth is, that distance, it broke something. She was frustrated. I was frustrated. Neither of us said it. We just stopped reaching for each other. People think urinary leaks are a bladder problem. They're not. They're an intimacy problem. And ours nearly cost us our marriage.

03

We were lying to each other. Without ever lying.

The worst part wasn't the leaks. It was everything we stopped saying.

I'd leave the room when the conversation got close to anything intimate. She'd stop asking how I felt. We'd talk about the kids, the lawn, the grocery list, never about us. Five years of small silences add up to something you can feel in the air of a house. A heaviness. A politeness between two people who used to be in love.

We weren't fighting. We were worse than fighting. We were fading.

How we found our way back.

At some point, I couldn't stand it anymore. I was watching the man I loved disappear inside his own house, and I needed to help him, even if he'd never ask.

I started looking for a solution. Then one afternoon, over coffee, a close friend leaned in and lowered her voice. Her husband had been through the same thing. She gave me one name: Orykas.

Bamboo-fiber boxers, cut like real underwear, with absorbent technology built invisibly inside. Her husband had been wearing them for a year. She said he was a different man. I ordered a three-pack that night and left it on Michael's nightstand without a word.

The next morning, he was wearing them. And something in his face had changed, something I hadn't seen in years.

A small warning if you're considering it: bamboo fiber of this quality is rare, and they go out of stock often. When we reordered, we waited three weeks. If you find them in stock, don't wait.Today, our life is ordinary again. Michael plays golf on Saturdays. We went back to Italy last summer. He undresses with the light on. And every now and then, he reaches for me in the middle of the night, the way he used to, thirty years ago. We're just us again.
